Productivity increases, sick days are reduced, numbers of accidents decrease, & overall morale has a noticeable uptick.  Seems like a great excuse to stop & eat a healthy lunch.

  • All the Perks Café is located in the lobby of our office (M-F, 7-4)
  • Food Trucks / Block Parties – Vendor food trucks stop for our personal enjoyment one Friday / month.
  • The Fashion Mall  is next door connected via a covered walkway & offers a full spectrum of dining options (  The mall offers various dine-in options from soup and sandwiches to filet mignon or hibachi grill.

Goals: Understanding what went wrong.


I have known many people that had great ideas, daydreams, and want that were never accomplished; some even moved backwards. Whether they wanted to be a Firefighter, CEO, Prom Queen, etc.; many of these people tend to look back and wonder how I got here. But why?

I believe that there a 5 steps that can help you to accomplish your goals.

1. Defining goals

Self-Reflection, Understanding, and Acceptance is a key component. Self-Reflection is a tool of understanding ones strengths and weaknesses. In doing this, I believe that finding these strengths and weaknesses can open your eyes to goals, career paths, and family choices that you never thought of. Self-Reflection is not easy, but is accentual to accomplishing goals.

2. Setting unrealistic goals

I don’t believe that setting goals to high is the problem, but to low. “The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we hit it.”, quoted by – Michelangelo Buonarroti – Renaissance artist. I think that he was onto something. If we set bars or barriers to low, they get in our way of accomplishing what our level of talent can do. When this happens goals aren’t there to help but to hinder our growth.

3. Mind Set

Positivity is a huge factor in accomplishing goals. We have all worked with, lived with, or been a culprit of negativity. Negativity is like a monster pulling us back from where we set ourselves to go. Whether negativity comes from the weather, a friend/family member, or change; resisting the urge will only help us to get where we want to go.

4. Hard work

Goals are not easy. If they were, everyone would accomplish a college degree, a promotion, or a marathon. I believe that goals need to be set and followed through with daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and until you reach your big goal; then you set a new goal all over again. By setting small goals, it is a reminder of your big goal on a daily basis.

5. Don’t give up

Some people let their insecurities, fears, and uncertainties win. I know this may seem silly, but I have witnessed people that only stand in their own way. Don’t miss your goals because you weren’t willing to fight for them.

Goals are a huge part in being successful in the recruiting industry, and I hope that this blog is inspirational.

Mind-Set Matters

Step into any leadership seminar, speak to any career coach, or lay on the couch of any psychologist, and you will be told that mind-set matters.  Maybe it won’t be said in that exact way, but the general premise behind the phrase is one of the keys to great leadership and overall life success.   A good friend recently gifted me a book called “Taking People with You” by YUM! Brands Chairman and CEO, David Novak.  David shares wisdom from the author John O’Keefe in  O’Keefe’s defines mind-set as a “prejudice, a bias, a fixed way of looking at things.  We all have them, some good and powerful and some bad and limiting.”  We hear prejudice and bias, and negative connotations typically come to mind as they have been ingrained in us. We are told that we should swiftly run in the opposite direction from being labeled biased or prejudiced. However, in terms of business and making your way up your career ladder, mind-set prejudices and biases are items you should strive to understand and stay in constant awareness.

Throughout my career, my mind-set has changed and matured to be framed by the good and powerful thoughts and not by the bad and limiting thoughts.  I have been fortunate to work with many great minds who are willing to mentor and develop up and coming industry talent.  O’Keefe says “The key, when applying this tool to your own way of thinking as a leader, is to remember that a mind-set is something you choose, not something that you leave up to chance.”

Below are a few points on how to use the tool:

  • Start by silently recognizing the limiting mind-sets you see in others (colleagues, family, friends). Notice how often people have mind-sets that weaken their results (e.g., I can’t do that, I always mess this up, you cannot do x in a recession, etc.). These mind-sets are beliefs that people hold to be true. However, you know they cannot be universally true, because you don’t hold them, or not all the time.
  • Next, realize you are no different.  You also have a set of limiting mind-sets that you hardly realize are there, though others are likely to see them in you.
  • Admit that your mind-set is a choice because if what you believe were really true, there would be no need to believe it.
  • Now, make an effort to choose mind-sets that will help you, not limit you.

How you view the world around you and the tasks immediately at hand will have an impact on the reactions you have and actions you take in life and on your career path.  Think positively and while every day will not be a guaranteed success; you will be on the right path to overall career success. The positive mind-set is a terrible thing to waste!

It’s not just about what you know

One of my college professors once stood in front of our class and said, “Your whole life, you have probably been told that when it comes to finding a job, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” We nodded as a collective, as we had all heard that phrase a million times. He continued, though, to tell us that is not actually the case. He told us, “It’s what you know, it’s who you know, AND it’s who likes you.”

Finding the right position for your career isn’t always about what is on your resume or how many people you know working in your field. Finding the right position is a combination of your experiences, having a foot in the door, and making a good impression when you meet with the company. It doesn’t matter how many people you know if you have zero qualifications for the job, and it doesn’t matter how many people you know if they wouldn’t vouch for you as a potential employee. What does matter is making connections with people in your field and gaining their respect.networking

When it comes to meeting new people, you can never have a network too large. Building and maintaining relationships is key not only for immediate gratification; it also will pay off in the long run. Whatever you’re looking for, whether it is a new job, a promotion, or any opportunity to further your career, every set of eyes and ears helps. The more people who know your goals, the better.

The reason I’m sitting in this chair, typing this post is because I made a connection with the president of Theoris IT, Brian Koch. We connected through LinkedIn, and I decided to take him up on his offer to get together for coffee and networking. As it turned out, networking led to a job offer. I’m a firm believer in taking chances and seeing where they lead you. You could end up with a whole new adventure!

Starting a new job can come with anxiety. Actually starting the job can be more stressful than the interview process which precedes it.  There are a few specific thoughts or questions that may run through your mind before the first day at the new office.

  • What will my new coworkers think of me?
  • Will I be good enough to do the job?
  • Was it a good decision to leave my previous employer?

The nervousness is most likely fear of the unknown. It is hard to go into a place not knowing the people, the culture, or the expectations fully.

The easiest way to cope with the change is to have a plan. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Get to know people and let them get to know you. Be open to meeting everyone.

You WILL BE good enough; you are brand new and not expected to move mountains… yet.  Take steps to learn the systems and processes.

Don’t think too much about your last employer, it was a stepping stone to where you are now and it is in the past for a reason. No need to make comparisons between then and now.

The best advice I have gotten when starting at a new company is to stay organized, take notes, learn new things about the organization each day, and listen more than you speak.

Always try to imagine best case scenarios instead of worst case.

In the words of Dr. Seuss, “And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! 98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.”

ImageI’ve been told that when you meet someone new they form an opinion about you in less than 30 seconds. I’m not sure what the science is behind that statement but I tend to believe this is true with most people. That being said, you better be ready to make a great first impression or forever be known by that person as the guy with a wrinkled shirt or girl with lipstick on her teeth.

I think it is important for all of us to keep this in mind when going out into the world because you never know who you may meet at Starbucks that may be just the person that can help you get to that next level in your career. This is especially important for candidates we are sending out in the field. Not only does their first impression affect themselves but it also affects the recruiter, sales person, and ultimately Theoris. As a newer recruiter this is something I am going to have to keep in mind while sending out candidates. We all are hungry to get a placement but must remember our personal brand is on the line as well. I think a part of the challenge of this job is keeping that balance of a quick placement and the best placement. I am looking forward to learning the tricks of the trade and creating a great personal brand through the impressions I am able to make on those around me.

All of this being said yesterday was my first day here at Theoris. I was definitely impressed by everyone’s friendly and helpful attitude. I am excited to be a part of this team and learn from whomever I can! Thank you for the warm welcome!

So often I findmyself fielding calls where on the other end of the phone one of our customers
has decided on a technological solution (a hammer), and are now looking for a
problem (the right nail).  I have to admit that when the customer has cash
in hand it’s always tempting to just take the money and run. However, the
reality is our clients don’t really want a hammer or a nail; they want
something of real value – a finished solution (like a house).  

We work in technology so it’s cool when we get to talk about a solution with
this cutting edge product or a process improvement framework coupled with some
techno buzz-word angle. Ultimately our customers don’t care how extensive our
big data credentials are or whether or not our mobile mojo has trumped our
social ace in the hole. 

The value we bring to an opportunity begins with the current cost to our
client.  In other words, the only way to calculate our value is to start
with the current cost of the client’s situation. It is important for us in the
consulting business to understand and agree on the current cost of status-quo.
Solid business decisions are primarily made when the cost of status quo
becomes so burdensome that the buyer must make a change to improve the
situation. I realize this sounds simple, but once you strip away all the sales
process, technique, and tools, all that is left is this one simple fact. When
pain reaches a tipping point, a decision to make a change is going to be made.

All Projects Are Business Projects.  The  beginning point is
rooted in getting agreement upon the current cost of doing business. This may
seem like a given, but you would be surprised how often we forget to take the
time and discuss the current cost of the issues, pains, and goals our customers
are facing before we grab a hammer and nail and go to town.

I’m not suggesting every consultant on every project needs to conduct a full
blown Return on Investment (ROI). Business projects are based on identified
issues, pains, and goals and some perspective on the cost of status quo.
So before we write the first line of code or recommend the next phase of
a project to our customers, let’s ask the right questions.  The
results of this business project mindset will be the foundation for furthering
our relationship as we discuss how we can swing our hammers and help our
customers be more successful using technology products and services.
